<p dir="ltr">Half a year has passed since I last posted!</p>
<p dir="ltr">Moving house, getting evicted from new house....blah blah blah. Generally very minimal miniature time has prevailed! Sometimes real life just gets in the way and we have to get by, gaze longingly at Harlequin releases etc and get nothing done!</p>
<p dir="ltr">This last three weeks though, I am thoroughly back in the swing of things! My local game club; Club HATE (Hackney Area Tabletop Enthusiasts) has launched a campaign based on all things Badab.</p>
<p dir="ltr">General successor chapters are allowed to take part as well as the 'true' Badab chapters so I took the opportunity to update the Angels Sanguine and build some of my Christmas presents!</p>
<p dir="ltr">Three friends have joined too, playing Charcharadons, Lamenters and some other guys that I forget!</p>
<p dir="ltr">I'm hoping this means that a semi-normal service can resume here at the Grotto and some more interesting posts than this one will follow soon. </p>
<p dir="ltr">Uploaded a small <u>stack</u> of pictures to give an idea what I'm up to at the moment :)</p>

Lulu pic<p dir="ltr">However long ago it was now (my memory sucks) a friend and I pledged on the awesome looking Raging Heros kickstarter for there soon to be released Toughest Girls of the Galaxy. </p>
<p dir="ltr">Basically three different types of army chicks that'd make awesome subs for the Imperial Guard...sorry, Astra Militarum.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Delays, resculpts and layers more detail added later we received the first few of our order late last week.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Here's a pic of the only one that doesn't need building to give you an idea of scale (the pic is a 'Lulu' - child snipers - so it's meant to be small).</p>
<p dir="ltr">I'll post more when I've built them and am not stuck with posting on my phone from the work canteen!</p>

Super quick post as it's <i>way </i>past my bedtime.</p>
<p dir="ltr">I've been building the odd Scion model here and there and they're all looking cool. I also received the stowage for my long range desert group style Taurox transports, hopefully they'll look great in the near future.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Back.to the men. I wanted a Commissar as it's the Guard, y'know? Guard ain't Guard with out a bossy guy in a flouncy hat threatening to shoot them!</p>
<p dir="ltr">I like most of the Commissar sculpts but none felt like they fit alongside an army of elite, teched up dudes. </p>
<p dir="ltr">Therefore I got the plastic one as, failing everything at least he comes with a hat that can be easily used elsewhere (the majority of it is a separate piece).</p>
<p dir="ltr">An hour or so of trimming, sanding and gluing later and we have what's shown in the pic! Gone is his pointy little face replaced by a standard Scion helmet. Gone too are his nasty jodhpurs and odd stance and his ugly-arse sabre; again replaced with parts straight from the Scion (sooooooo many bits in that box!).</p>
<p dir="ltr">He's come out pretty much exactly as I hoped! He might even just get to skip the building queue and go straight to paint!</p>
<p dir="ltr">Until next time everyone, thanks for checking in!</p>

Apologies.</p>
<p dir="ltr">This time's excuse is pretty much just that I haven't focused on anything for weeks so have nothing to report! </p>
<p dir="ltr">I've started building axles for the Taurox conversions I'm working on so I'll report back on how they come out soon but, in brief, they're a huge pain.</p>
<p dir="ltr">I also bought the Malifaux McMourning box for some fun and because the models are amazing! Except for one...</p>
<p dir="ltr">The zombie chihuahua is small. Really small. Too small? </p>
<p dir="ltr">At what point does someone look at CAD designer's mock up and say "woah woah, people can't actually handle those pieces mate" or "hang on, aren't those legs too tiny to actually glue to anything that'll let it support itself?". See the photo's if you need an idea.</p>
<p dir="ltr">It's silly small. Yes they're packed with detail but its so small I'm yet to see a painted version that makes <u>very</u> good use of it all! It's a shame but I guess I'll see how I get on with it once it's based and the paint flows.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Sorry again for the big wait and then this substantial lack of content! I'll have a word with myself and get back to something useful!</p>

I'd finish the Dark Angels, sell the Grey Knights and redo all my old, beloved 'Dar.<br />
<br />
Then GW took it upon themselves to release the Knight Titan and I had to have one. That was the quickest I've ever bought-built-painted something to finish ever. I love it, I'll be getting another. But now onto Eldar...<br />
<br />
<i>Then</i> GW took it upon themselves to release Scions and the Militarum Tempestus. I would resist. No more distractions from my one true love of 40K. Eldar time!<br />
<br />
<i>THEN</i> my friend gave me some Scions because I spent he whole of the Friday at Throne of Skulls helping him paint his Tau. Bugger. Now I had Scions I might as well have a Taurox right? <i>Right</i>??<br />

</tbody></table>
Like 99% of the internet I feel the need to convert it though. Choices were many. Wheels? Half track? What to do? I decided on wheels as I have a lot spare and a friend had even more. I'd need lots as I think truck style 6 wheeler 'Roxs suck - you'd have to rebuild the whole front wheel arch to make it OK really. Not something I want to do to four or five of them:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFJhcut9edV6WdqQAZ0zvNvX0UQvyLgQ5TBUvrJ-uywfZVFLe3XYdDwNmrmMgD35hlujyhzhaw2jC_SfmRU1x-kiw0iAhWowpkLkLKtsJk_gxYgSr_Bd8VE910y3bGsVqxKh8FrOGNJF0/s1600/truk.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFJhcut9edV6WdqQAZ0zvNvX0UQvyLgQ5TBUvrJ-uywfZVFLe3XYdDwNmrmMgD35hlujyhzhaw2jC_SfmRU1x-kiw0iAhWowpkLkLKtsJk_gxYgSr_Bd8VE910y3bGsVqxKh8FrOGNJF0/s1600/truk.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Fugly</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
So that meant 8 wheels. Doubling up on the bigger wheels at the front was too much of a squeeze so I went for the smaller, bike sized ones which are tiny. It's therefore taken a lot of work to try and get them mounted correctly but here's where I'm at and almost happy with it:<br />

Not bad, right? I think it's OK anyway. There's still stuff to tweak and it does actually look better with the whole thing sitting even lower but this is set up number three and it's looking how I want it to - there's a limit to how much I want to keep chopping at bits and re-gluing again and again. The next couple will be tidier and I'll do a step by step.<br />

<p dir="ltr">The pic with the Deathwing is the one with the leg armour in the right places.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Doesn't look massively different to the previous 'in pieces' shot I posted but that trim took a good while. Also done washes, silvers etc. Two evenings to go!</p>

<p dir="ltr">Because I'm SO unorganised I always, as any regulars will have noticed, end up doing catch up posts and back tracking. Or I start something new and then forget to update about it until it's finished.</p>
<p dir="ltr">It's mainly because, for 'full' posts I use my camera and computer. So, to get smaller, less long winded, updates I'm trying the smartphone/app route. Let's see if it works right?</p>
<p dir="ltr">I, like most other 40k folk, got excited about the Imperial Knight release. Then I realised it solved a couple of issues I have with my Dark Angel Army - namely taking a weight of fire off the bikes and also killing tanks. </p>
<p dir="ltr">Today I've got.it from black to a bunch of base coated pieces. I'm painting it in 22 pieces at the minute - it's a pain in the arse.</p>
<p dir="ltr">I am quite pleased with the diamond pattern shoulder though!</p>
<p dir="ltr">More mobile updates soon!</p>

Sorry for that. You've not missed much, honestly. I had Throne of Skulls, a (small, minor) heart operation (!), and Christmas working in a clothes shop. The Grotto has very much been on a back burner, along with most hobby stuff.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
But with a new year comes a fresh start. Since my last post we've had these two show up:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m3600278a_60040199040_Escalation01_873x627.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m3600278a_60040199040_Escalation01_873x627.jpg" height="229" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m3600273a_60030199037_StrongholdAssaultENG01_873x627.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m3600273a_60030199037_StrongholdAssaultENG01_873x627.jpg" height="229" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And the internet went into melt down. My group have loosely agreed no D-Weapons without prior arrangement/warning. I know I don't have any interest in playing one by chance. The thing is that it's now allowed at ToS. The reason I go to Throne of Skulls isn't to win a competition. I go for a bunch of fun games in a place with a bar and my friends. It's laid back, casual fun. My kind of 40k. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If I get there in March and everyone has a titan/aquila redoubt/whatever it's not going to be any fun. Unless...unless I take my Revenant (BWAHAHAHAHAHA). But then I'll be the douche no one wants to play. Problems. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We have friends going this month and next so we'll see what the state of play is at these 'friendly' tournaments. A lot of D-Weapons though and it could well be the end of me going. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On the other hand I'm very happy that FW is now allowed in all shapes and forms :D</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next up came this:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m3700225a_60030106005_2014TyranidCodexENG01_873x627.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m3700225a_60030106005_2014TyranidCodexENG01_873x627.jpg" height="229" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And the internet went into meltdown. Sigh. I've not seen the codex. From what I've read of the non-sob-sob-boohoo reviews it seems really fluffy. Swarms'n'stuff is Nids or me. Whether the points etc are right and things like that remains to be seen. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Oh well. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><u>Christmas</u></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><u><br /></u></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Images/Product/AlternativeFW/large/night-raptors6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Images/Product/AlternativeFW/large/night-raptors6.jpg" height="272" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><u><br /></u></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I got some Forgeworld Night Lord Raptors for Christmas from my parents. Unfortunately they were the worst cast stuff I've had from FW in many, many years. Have a look <a href="https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ywe0k7bk2e2fzy1/7QAZwYwdbj" target="_blank">here</a> at the pics if you're interested. As ever though, FW's customer support was first class and they sent me a full replacement. Thanks Forgeworld folk!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxBAtcGkN7CCco3ztpJFLV_yLZG5i_bpyqX9QJiJSIIDn1hxNE6al_5uEbjeBR04e8fh6M_nwvbtKytLYd1BV_rk94-C_HnogVN5m5GhGiNOF2w2BbhS3smQ8m4hO_HXRh1nv7yGKiB3M/s320/m2ejustice.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxBAtcGkN7CCco3ztpJFLV_yLZG5i_bpyqX9QJiJSIIDn1hxNE6al_5uEbjeBR04e8fh6M_nwvbtKytLYd1BV_rk94-C_HnogVN5m5GhGiNOF2w2BbhS3smQ8m4hO_HXRh1nv7yGKiB3M/s320/m2ejustice.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As is traditional for us gamer types we like to treat ourselves too. So off I went to the awesome Dark Sphere and picked up Malifaux M2E Lady Justice and Co and the new rules. If you haven't looked at the new Malifaux models yet do yourself a favour and go look <a href="http://wyrd-games.net/shop/Crew-Boxes/" target="_blank">here</a>. I honestly think they're making the best models out there at the minute - there's not a single crew box I don't want to buy just to build and paint. More on them in coming weeks and months. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Beyond Malifaux I also got the Ghost Warrior Eldar bundle (25% off thanks again Dark Sphere) and saved a chunk of ££. Eldar are this years main thing along with selling stuff. If I get the Malifaux boxes I'll probably paint and sell to fund the next one. I have a 2k Ork army that's never seen paint or a game which'll be hitting eBay along with maybe the Grey Knights if I finish painting them. I do not need three Marine armies...though I'll probably like them again once I've painted. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My other aim for this year is to paint some models I just like. Not for gaming or anything, just because they're cool. Kingdom Death will be shipping their game sometime this year, the updates for which have been awesome. Relic Knights should also be shipping after a VERY long wait and not-so-awesome updates. Raging heroes are also about to launch their Toughest Girls in the Galaxy which are also looking very nice and will be joining my old metal Cadians as a cool Vet squad.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And then there's Infinity...I'd really like to get into Infinity.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Anyway, enough waffling on. I'll try and get back into one or two posts a month and actually paint some stuff to completion this year!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Normal service resuming soon...</div>

Toward the end of last week I posted with plans of an action packed few days over the weekend getting stared painting my Dark Angels ready for Throne of Skulls a little over a week away. I also promised updates.<br />
<br />
Unfortunately for the painting a friend came to stay for the weekend at short notice...nothing like being two days behind before you even start!<br />
<br />
I got some done today so here's how it's going...<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
At the start of today I had everything base coated - black for all the Ravenwing elements and layers browns for the Deathwing.<br />
<br />
I've probably done 9 hours maybe today...what do I have to show for it?<br />
<br />
I started off on the DW. With their armour already done (zenithal/zethinal highlighting...I'm not great at it) it was a case of blocking in bases for all the other areas - red guns, dark grey armour joints, grey insignia, various metal bits...you get the idea. They're now at this stage:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEju_cKALsZp0qwfbC1dn-GIUnHaiMqFOnmy8FZa2-dwyYKidhmJXS_Ba4FQqyTI8LMJbXjFG9xEwT2kVfkOFZ89cSgjwUNHNxDe0MJg_w20qWresv8uJj_gIY20AcNuvFKQ9axH3ouowpQ/s1600/20131106_020108.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEju_cKALsZp0qwfbC1dn-GIUnHaiMqFOnmy8FZa2-dwyYKidhmJXS_Ba4FQqyTI8LMJbXjFG9xEwT2kVfkOFZ89cSgjwUNHNxDe0MJg_w20qWresv8uJj_gIY20AcNuvFKQ9axH3ouowpQ/s320/20131106_020108.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgq1jvqoShQMg3f87jyKYpcfukUpTrOaRT5pV_rGQBYu30_NvLkN5sV-_WULo7vo2W-avj0g-pDJrpzfgEUSEeGHvjRav88V8LQS9K5OHY7oYSnAaQSudaV-8R2u00wlQIEJPeRoNAiJaQ/s1600/20131106_020120.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgq1jvqoShQMg3f87jyKYpcfukUpTrOaRT5pV_rGQBYu30_NvLkN5sV-_WULo7vo2W-avj0g-pDJrpzfgEUSEeGHvjRav88V8LQS9K5OHY7oYSnAaQSudaV-8R2u00wlQIEJPeRoNAiJaQ/s320/20131106_020120.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilV28-G97EBeDKy-TmBej_plF9p20JQ93Kt0ixNYx6A4RWoIat2SgZespAAyfqUahSk6LaDMiiP4cUmiIe69_uNlu8b8nqF5V8Pp2hlaL1LhTWvcXorpnoSL3ID-4XprN5-6XFVxLyNFA/s1600/20131106_020315.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilV28-G97EBeDKy-TmBej_plF9p20JQ93Kt0ixNYx6A4RWoIat2SgZespAAyfqUahSk6LaDMiiP4cUmiIe69_uNlu8b8nqF5V8Pp2hlaL1LhTWvcXorpnoSL3ID-4XprN5-6XFVxLyNFA/s320/20131106_020315.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
There's still plenty to do to them but they're at a point I can put them to one side and come back. If worst comes to the worst I can play with them at this quality I guess, I just won't be as proud of them as I'd like to be.<br />
<br />
On top of that I started on the Darkshroud:<br />

The conversion on this has blended nicely under primer, I'm quite happy with it and it's quite interesting to paint too. I simultaneously started on Sammael's jetbike:<br />

<br />
Again, it looks a lot more 'proper' with a layer of black over it to hide the conversions. I do wish I'd sanded down better round the filler on the bottom of the tail fin though. For both these, and probably all the other bikes, I'm using a nice and dark 1:1 mix of black and boltgun metal. Drybrush boltgun lightly over it and it should look good I hope.<br />
<br />
Aside from painting I finished off my last two conversions for the force - the RW flamers. I think I mentioned a few weeks ago this conversion. Basically I used hand flamers rather than regular ones because it looks more practical and cooler. They have a fuel tank made from trimmed down multi melta back packs and some hoses running between:<br />

It's been a few weeks since my last post because I've been putting off the inevitable: PAINTING.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Goddammit though, I have to bite the bullet sometime.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
That sometime is now. A week on Friday a few friends and I head to the GW November Throne of Skulls at Warhammer World. Last time I was there I ad a pretty sucky timebecause my 5th ed Angels Sanguine got trounced. Repeatedly. No fun. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
To mend that I'm taking an army I don't really know, it's really my play style and that I've barely practiced with. On top of that it needs painting. I essentially have five full days. (away with work, travel etc) so it's going to be a challenge for sure. Here's where things are at...</div>
<div>
<br /><a name='more'></a></div>
<div>
<a href="http://rebelsgrotto.blogspot.co.uk/2013/04/painting-deathwing.html" target="_blank">A few posts back</a> I showed some Deathwing I started with the airbrush. I need 10 for the force I'm taking so have to paint another 5 to match. The only problem is I don't remember my recipe. That's a bugger. I'm sure I can figure it out, just hopefully without any cock ups first. Watch this space.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The 'to-do' pile: 18 bikes, Sammael, Darkshroud, 10 Terminators, 2 attack bikes.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
To allow me to procrastinate further I decided to add to Sammael's jetbike. Since I 'finished' the conversion I've been thinking something was missing. Recently I decided it lacked height. Today I decided to add a tail fin made from an old landspeeder wing. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here's before:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhF6MIZKRJFtW56RxHGrgf-PWjQBTmZfCtyllkjhQGkn58UNrO8mJkR0mXQeqp62AgyL4M21967o_fqDHAO9lIwyHg1RP74so-2dD5tRkHgeb7ldVh_QfUXkoSIeseD0hz4DBEZnPvgq7w/s1600/2013-03-31+001+2013-03-31+003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhF6MIZKRJFtW56RxHGrgf-PWjQBTmZfCtyllkjhQGkn58UNrO8mJkR0mXQeqp62AgyL4M21967o_fqDHAO9lIwyHg1RP74so-2dD5tRkHgeb7ldVh_QfUXkoSIeseD0hz4DBEZnPvgq7w/s320/2013-03-31+001+2013-03-31+003.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /><div>
And now:</div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgF9XSx2NZ2ar-2ewxep4gtzBLJ4hcLRRPP9dhyphenhyphenXMGBsTbdCNnz25giIxKSbVQ_z_KgLIMQ4NVgdd32IxguS2WUDGcR__4UDj4dHO69I2TvgJMc9j7aENO2_dkn39aLhvWNYCYnzI7eC2Y/s1600/20131029_203700.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgF9XSx2NZ2ar-2ewxep4gtzBLJ4hcLRRPP9dhyphenhyphenXMGBsTbdCNnz25giIxKSbVQ_z_KgLIMQ4NVgdd32IxguS2WUDGcR__4UDj4dHO69I2TvgJMc9j7aENO2_dkn39aLhvWNYCYnzI7eC2Y/s400/20131029_203700.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Admittedly I now think it's maybe too tall but I do prefer it looking more 'chunky' like this - I'd added a lot of bits to the front to it helps balance it. I might try and add a couple of Ravenwing icons to the fin if I can sand them slimmer. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Another shot:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjB27mKfmRdOg-shhoE6FwytNauosY3pIAYBi45kPa0Ymu5I2CHB92qIZdhFQ9ICH-tcL_PxTof1GCANZHO7loO0NHGdbkMZbyVgIV2olqGFfmhRuoryVBMhLqkyuZCAMj7W3fcdlGERjM/s1600/20131029_203737.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjB27mKfmRdOg-shhoE6FwytNauosY3pIAYBi45kPa0Ymu5I2CHB92qIZdhFQ9ICH-tcL_PxTof1GCANZHO7loO0NHGdbkMZbyVgIV2olqGFfmhRuoryVBMhLqkyuZCAMj7W3fcdlGERjM/s320/20131029_203737.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
With that done I actually got the paints out and started on bases for everything in one batch. I made the bases a while ago from cork sheet:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDFnzZFgVR8RlZpczRdgrqlBUgrQ6TSRucwEv79EJlfC04DvdelQT-KOGvM75mqvuQ2rP4HQq3LM4T4MV5XeHqOJByo9VA58mwDgTFLzznF8oLIvTzieLCTX5IDZwQLBnZ1FYuFVVGfDA/s1600/2013-02-21+001+2013-02-21+005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDFnzZFgVR8RlZpczRdgrqlBUgrQ6TSRucwEv79EJlfC04DvdelQT-KOGvM75mqvuQ2rP4HQq3LM4T4MV5XeHqOJByo9VA58mwDgTFLzznF8oLIvTzieLCTX5IDZwQLBnZ1FYuFVVGfDA/s320/2013-02-21+001+2013-02-21+005.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I wanted them a reddish brown, kind of a Martian landscape of dry, flat plains. I used a Vallejo coloured surface primer for over black undercoat for some natural shading. I then drybrushed a couple of old GW colours - Bestial Brown and Snakebite Leather - over all the edges and 'gravel'. This is how they came out:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And that's pretty much where I'm up to. Sorry there's isn't much of any actually painted Dark Angels as the title really suggests, there will be! The plan is: Sunday - undercoats for everything, start Deathwing; Monday - Deathwing, start Sammael; Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday - Ravenwing squad per day plus Darkshroud. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It's going to be a real challenge. The advantage is that most of the army is black so it's really going to be a case of undercoat black, base coat black, details. It sounds simple anyway and with 7 models per day I'm hoping to be able to do them to a semi-decent standard before the tournament. I'll also <i>try</i> to update this each day...that'll be the real challenge!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Wish me luck!</div>

I've been adding little bits and bobs to the bikers this week and finishing off the last few riders. It's not the most exciting for photo's so I'll show them when it's time to paint.<br />
<br />
Yesterday I went back to working on the Darkshroud. I'd started working on it a few weeks ago and then put it to one side as I couldn't decide quite what to do with it.<br />
<br />
Whole bunch of pictures after the jump...<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>For those that haven't seen this a couple of posts ago, here's where I was at last time with it:<br />

<br />
For the above I'd mounted the bolter on the 'pulpit' itself. I wasn't happy still with the top though as it was still very chunky and the rhino hatch just didn't look right. This is why I put it to one side while I decided how to progress.<br />
<br />
Yesterday I bit the bullet and sawed off the whole pulpit/turret section:<br />
<br />

**Top tip** - Have a plan. I sawed this off and then realised I had no idea what to replace what I'd removed with! Foolish.<br />
<br />
30 minutes of rummaging through parts etc later I finally had a plan! Apologies in advancefor the photo's - they're all very work in progress snapped sporadically off my phone. Here's how it's working out so far:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC_ATOHXNYcxo18FihhhfJh_g3kezojQprQo9vYpS7dsuqamGS9wKdsHkB356uuYqclWNymGxYbX3TxjbOrRpEIJAPTv8j_RTlAMoiVgp_zG1d8ElO50pEV2E4cV_TeNiMOUX3Qce1jeU/s1600/20130918_170122.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC_ATOHXNYcxo18FihhhfJh_g3kezojQprQo9vYpS7dsuqamGS9wKdsHkB356uuYqclWNymGxYbX3TxjbOrRpEIJAPTv8j_RTlAMoiVgp_zG1d8ElO50pEV2E4cV_TeNiMOUX3Qce1jeU/s320/20130918_170122.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
First off I added a small section of tube and green stuffed around it for strength. Next up I needed a new turret piece:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjL0Wrt22lku_4yiHohJvd1mW4FSSAIV2edvQxQScVfSoCtkOxAr7odGGqgl7cUdRGMv_MGlcCezvyleOhK97qEQq43Kr0had3FSIwCwhL-wnyZ54ZCt8h1gBzhrCEFr1xwR4DAaps80I/s1600/20130918_170202.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjL0Wrt22lku_4yiHohJvd1mW4FSSAIV2edvQxQScVfSoCtkOxAr7odGGqgl7cUdRGMv_MGlcCezvyleOhK97qEQq43Kr0had3FSIwCwhL-wnyZ54ZCt8h1gBzhrCEFr1xwR4DAaps80I/s320/20130918_170202.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Old Imperial tank wheels are a bits box essential! The middle one was the best size after a quick review and dry fit. They have a very useful peg on the bottom that fits nicely in that tube:<br />
<br />

<br />
The improvement is most noticeable from the side profile which is now lower and more sleek:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjw7Bao-ohfjoSuEWYe3QJsJxYQkOR89-uqxDUTXLscrpVnclI61a6yV8MKpn7pD0pD8uUPIEm5m1iTbT9SJKepMSM_Is9pRccq8cnBBjgHJPUfMtu5peD_BT4GWPo7Pd_CL-JrxiXRGbw/s1600/20130918_171304.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjw7Bao-ohfjoSuEWYe3QJsJxYQkOR89-uqxDUTXLscrpVnclI61a6yV8MKpn7pD0pD8uUPIEm5m1iTbT9SJKepMSM_Is9pRccq8cnBBjgHJPUfMtu5peD_BT4GWPo7Pd_CL-JrxiXRGbw/s320/20130918_171304.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
I then bent some plasticard and went to work building up around the wheel piece:<br />

This is when it got a little trickier. To fit pieces onto such an unconventional shape - straight and round edges - I made several paper versions. Paper is handy as it's so much easier to trim, to draw on etc. When I have the paper template that fits correctly i use paper glue to stick it to plasticard and then trim the plastic around it. That gives you this:</div>

<div>
So that's where I'm up to right now. Plenty of bits still to go but not bad progress for a couple of days of winging it!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I also played a game today against my friends GK/IG force. It was my first game with a heavy Ravenwing presence. Over all I lost something like 8-2 but it was a much closer game than that score would suggest. I was too cautious and need to really get the hang of going for the jugular with these guys!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'll hopefully have more progress over next week. Have a good weekend all!</div>

My work bench has been in full production mode this last week or so.<br />
<br />
Stacks of sprues. Two trays (and a frisbee) full of various bits and parts. Bikes pulled apart by hand. Thumbs sliced apart by knife.<br />
<br />
You get the idea.<br />
<br />
I came to a point of indecision with the Darkshroud - I think I'm going to entirely rebuild the front turret as part of the body. I put it to one side so I can come back to it after sourcing some parts and having thought about it a lot.<br />
<br />
In the mean time I've been doing all the tedious jobs involved with this hobby - scraping flash lines and drilling bolter barrels (two different diameter drills per barrel). You know the stuff.<br />
<br />
Today I started on the Command Squad which will be five men with the grenade launcher and banner option built as well making 6 total. You can see where I'm up to in the top picture. Aside from that I've added a few slightly different riders to break up the standard rather static pose. Here's a couple of them for now:<br />

This Sgt is a super simple bit swap with a head from the Drakshroud and a Grey Knight hand. I also doubled up his wing banner things on the bike to bring it in line with the Dark Vengeance Sgt.<br />

This chap is the rider from the Heresy era jetbike which I converted into Sammael (see last post). He didn't fit the bike too well so he needed leaning right forward to reach the handlebars and is pinned at each joint.<br />

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Lastly here's one of two attack bikes. This is the old metal-plastic hybrid model and I lost the gunner and used the melta for the old converted Stormraven. The old version like this had the gun on the stand rather than the rail so I could have built it all but decided to have a little fun instead. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Initially the gunner was going to be stepping from the sidecar but it looked like he's kneeling. Not cool. So then I thought 'why would he be not staying sat down?' well if his driver is dead leaving him a sitting duck of course.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So I killed the rider. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Open hand from the Sang Guard kit, straight bolt pistol arm, drill holes. Job done. His other hand has been blown off but still dangles from the handlebar! I showed a few friends this on Facebook and they said I had to play it as single wound, no +1 toughness (as he's off the bike) and either no move or always difficult terrain. I said 'hahaha, no'. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'll be making a downed biker for one of the other squad too. I also have a couple of (hopefully) cool flamer conversions on their way too. Pics of all that soon.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
See you all soon!</div>

</tbody></table>
Hi All,<br />
<br />
I'm finally getting back into the hobby swing of things here at the Grotto. After my 'quick' Deathwing project ground to a halt over the last couple of months I've finally had another couple of games.<br />
<br />
Getting the dice back rolling is always a good boost to anything gathering dust on the work bench.<br />
<br />
With a mixed bag of results under my belt from the Deathwing I'd built up it's time to take a step back and see what I can change with plenty of time before ToS rolls round in November. <br />
<br />
The gist of it is - add more bikes!<br />
<br />
After the break check out where I'm at with a few conversions and general plans...<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
So, why did the Deathwing fail? Here's the list:<br />
<br />
Belial<br />
10 Deathwing, cyclone, assault cannon 2 chainfist<br />
5 Deathwing, cyclone, chainfist<br />
5 Deathwing, assault cannon, chainfist<br />
3 Ravenwing, plasa gun, melta attack bike<br />
3 Ravenwing, plasa gun, melta attack bike<br />
<br />
I think that was all of it. So where did it go wrong?<br />
<br />
I played Tau.<br />
<br />
Or t-OW! as I like to call them now. It's one of those match ups that'll always hurt the DW. I was pretty much tabled both games turn three. I also played my friends Chaos Marines with Daemon allies. That ended a very close draw after we rolled and the game ended turn 5, here's what was left on the table:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6RxipHAZWHPZHP3LXB4JdCkB3xqX6bBSh2Pp6gz-mI9eyN9B0aLdRuAaaYtfgSYwlUfDaWJcNJPCiE66eYuUd9hAjmJaq1eMQPA3qFt2UOhpC_e3GYpwjdWf4RG8TZB8nMQS3cxxgv_8/s1600/20130814_180502.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6RxipHAZWHPZHP3LXB4JdCkB3xqX6bBSh2Pp6gz-mI9eyN9B0aLdRuAaaYtfgSYwlUfDaWJcNJPCiE66eYuUd9hAjmJaq1eMQPA3qFt2UOhpC_e3GYpwjdWf4RG8TZB8nMQS3cxxgv_8/s320/20130814_180502.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Yep, that's one Terminator about to face down a Maulerfiend, Plague Marines,<br />Havocs and two rhinos (Forgefiend is dead).</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Luckily (I'd say tactically) that one man held Linebreaker! Oh yeah. Emperors finest right there.<br />
<br />
The biggest let down? Belial failing to kill 5 Fire Warriors over multiple rounds of combat. He's out of the new list. Fool.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigyEimQAIJvvZA3uEcJ5qdfi2eHkHAuxW0nFsm4RgELykgYV5Z8JOKFx9MHDZmYYlROXENZ6hfTJEHwjEzUcS1Z8EvuevtvqebJ8nnwaaHcqV31ijxUlVAnEObEdbMMb1EjDJJ-L6hq9s/s1600/2013-02-23+001+2013-02-23+001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="183" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigyEimQAIJvvZA3uEcJ5qdfi2eHkHAuxW0nFsm4RgELykgYV5Z8JOKFx9MHDZmYYlROXENZ6hfTJEHwjEzUcS1Z8EvuevtvqebJ8nnwaaHcqV31ijxUlVAnEObEdbMMb1EjDJJ-L6hq9s/s320/2013-02-23+001+2013-02-23+001.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Three versions of the same <strike>pussy</strike> Awesome Hero of the Imperium</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
So the bikes were sleeper highlights of both Tau games, despite me not using them too well. So, with Belial out, in comes Sammael:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjn6uSxGipfTCX-2_8LyrZsPXFkRCjLGil_XccaRY9IZs0C_CezF1hQ2mh69PgDUHY0pR7e2pMbTxwlJiu6gM0eFr2S64zbSl_iF0e86hD3Sxp7fbRjvY1CtE3_d601wld3tt_3qeSkN20/s1600/20130826_214342.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjn6uSxGipfTCX-2_8LyrZsPXFkRCjLGil_XccaRY9IZs0C_CezF1hQ2mh69PgDUHY0pR7e2pMbTxwlJiu6gM0eFr2S64zbSl_iF0e86hD3Sxp7fbRjvY1CtE3_d601wld3tt_3qeSkN20/s400/20130826_214342.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Quite chuffed with this conversion.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The new list will look something like:<br />
<br />
Sammael<br />
5 Ravenwing Command Sqd (maybe RW banner)<br />
6 Ravenwing, 2 flamers, melta attack bike<br />
6 Ravenwing, 2 plasma, melta attack bike<br />
10 Deathwing, cyclone, assault cannon, 2 chainfist<br />
Ravenwing Darkshroud<br />
<br />
It's not a million miles from my other army - still has terminators (love the models, fluff etc) and is still nicely themed around the scouting force. I could optimise it without the DW and adding in more bikes or Knights but that's a) boring net list and b) requires shopping.<br />
<br />
I did go out and buy a battleforce and the Darkshroud. Which leads me nicely to the next conversion photo - I HATE the Darkshroud forward turret. Hate it.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">First plan was to keep the ornate bits but it was still very chunky.</td></tr>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Here's where we're at now having trimmed the uprights to make it into a<br />self contained mini turret. I like this but not the cupola - it's too<br />detailed compared to the rest of the model.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
That's about where I'm up to. As I mentioned earlier I still have over two months so I'm really hoping I can have these looking good for the weekend of ToS, especially given the pretty simple RW scheme (black and black and black and maybe some red). I also have the week before the event off so I'm hoping I can turn up with a cool army. I have some quite interesting conversions planned for, at least, the flamers, an attack bike, a plasma gunner and a regular guy.<br />
<br />
I'll update this soon once I've chopped stuff up!RebelGrothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15278367117453799381noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9080874443240934561.post-26559553641020520282013-07-03T12:03:00.000+01:002013-07-03T12:03:32.080+01:007 Weeks Away - Slow Progress<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://blog.zerodean.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/nothing-great-was-ever-achieved-without-enthusiasm-emerson.gif" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://blog.zerodean.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/nothing-great-was-ever-achieved-without-enthusiasm-emerson.gif" width="320" /></a></div>
My last post was 7 weeks ago tomorrow. I've been lazy, and lacking enthusiasm.<br />
<br />
But no longer!!<br />
<br />
Facing up to painting up my third Marine army in a row (Blood Angels, Grey Knights then Dark Angels) sapped me of all enthusiasm.<br /><br />I actually packed away everything and started to get back into drawing. It's been a nice break!<br />
<br />
With Eldar, my first 40k amy, released last month I'm getting back toward looking forward to models again. As the picture above says, there's no point working on things you want to be good if you don't have the enthusiasm to make them so!<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>The plan is to split painting between the Marines and the Eldar. That'll give me variety and good breaks from painting bone and black on the DA and lots of different things for the Elves.<br />
<br />
Here's what I had in various boxes for Aspect Warriors and a bit of other stuff:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4RrlMke35oyKlZVlVtKWqkmzf0-pSyOeSMzy2svPZpc4WMXTQMttGngIyhHOSi4SQrXJk4BtG5BC9g8zoxloFm2Ghte8Yn7aNHBa8FSJQHbibKpOjnwj3EzQZXx03_OAQfjBntZTe0DI/s960/sheet.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4RrlMke35oyKlZVlVtKWqkmzf0-pSyOeSMzy2svPZpc4WMXTQMttGngIyhHOSi4SQrXJk4BtG5BC9g8zoxloFm2Ghte8Yn7aNHBa8FSJQHbibKpOjnwj3EzQZXx03_OAQfjBntZTe0DI/s320/sheet.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And now, post simple green:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRoA2ih7mANLW5FJLb7LWWWR-Au3p2ny8eSlJUe0NkzyEyaanP59m2qsRH1vg-dy37mzqJ0XJ2KPOaScHodkdI2sP3KYMdGZ3H9i8GwpuyjZcDouVJfdaHsxIohV3jWgkQMNCumwL3314/s960/Pot%2527o%2527Dar.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRoA2ih7mANLW5FJLb7LWWWR-Au3p2ny8eSlJUe0NkzyEyaanP59m2qsRH1vg-dy37mzqJ0XJ2KPOaScHodkdI2sP3KYMdGZ3H9i8GwpuyjZcDouVJfdaHsxIohV3jWgkQMNCumwL3314/s320/Pot%2527o%2527Dar.jpg" width="301" /></a></div>
<br />
The only new Eldar purchase I made was:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheTbhbr-EdKI6mGq-BGjfTsdjLoKJ1hyqx4JmAP2s6p_ioWjBybBUG9tPxDcocDhjOVUWyhsgRwQO1vWs8w1UWHolYDR-M5oyMgQKvaRzvrmXfCBzvR9t6A-7DkampJRp3UcPlfyWVE8Q/s960/dex.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheTbhbr-EdKI6mGq-BGjfTsdjLoKJ1hyqx4JmAP2s6p_ioWjBybBUG9tPxDcocDhjOVUWyhsgRwQO1vWs8w1UWHolYDR-M5oyMgQKvaRzvrmXfCBzvR9t6A-7DkampJRp3UcPlfyWVE8Q/s320/dex.jpg" width="179" /></a></div>
<br />
Got to admit, I can't really recommend buying a Ltd Edition codex... £30 for a dust jacket and an envelope with a number in isn't totally worthwhile! Oh well. They're my first love so it's OK(ish).<br />
<br />
I've also been scouring eBay for a couple of things, namely the three Phoenix Lords I don't own. Only problem is that eBay is getting INSANE:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjB-d0hADkB51gWi1M58RInXr7MO7Pk_fS6w7YBnlMJFP7pgi1-6wSxSLav7x534e-9-wYUKrbiORRARVbudIYmf83Fzh0dz330RfHRhKht8tlIiO-vtibNq845moIoRLNy9uPSJ_E_0xY/s960/Expensive%2521.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjB-d0hADkB51gWi1M58RInXr7MO7Pk_fS6w7YBnlMJFP7pgi1-6wSxSLav7x534e-9-wYUKrbiORRARVbudIYmf83Fzh0dz330RfHRhKht8tlIiO-vtibNq845moIoRLNy9uPSJ_E_0xY/s320/Expensive%2521.jpg" width="238" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I understand people wanting a metal Asurmen - it's what I was looking for - but £29.16?? I'd have two Finecast ones thankyou!<br />
<br />
And £56.75 for Iyanden?? Are people stupid? It's £30 with free postage from GW?? The special edition was cheaper than that one went for!<br />
<br />
Anyway. The ball is rolling again. I need to decide how to base the Eldar. I wanted to buy some nice resin bases for them but it's just too many ££ for an army wide purchase. I'm trying to think of a clever way to make some, we'll see.<br />
<br />
Oh, I also sorted out all my bits boxes:<br />

In the two or so years I've been blogging away here on the big old internet, and across the 90-ish posts I've thrown out there, there has been ONE completed model shown on these colourless pages!<br /><br />It's time for a change dear reader!<br /><br />Even the picture to the left, designed to be my 'painting article' header is out of date - I've recently started using a wet pallette (how did I used to cope without one??? If you keep thinking about doing one, DO IT) and recently have been getting some practice in with my airbrush.<br /><br />Anyway, onto todays project: getting the Dark Angels coloured in...<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
I started off with a squad yesterday, five Terminators, mainly re-paints from my earlier brushed version of the scheme. I wasn't happy with yesterdays effort so, in an attempt to learn, went away and thought about what I'd done and why I didn't like it.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Left squad - yesterday. Right squad - today.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I decided I'd got the paint on a little to heavily, resulting in a more yellow finish than I'd expected. Also I had patches where the paint was very splattered where it blended to the darker colour below. Today I used the same colours but with more pressure through the airbrush (got rid of the splatters) and a more patient approach. I much prefer the boney colour on the right hand squad compared to the more yellow on the left..<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Not the best pictures today, sorry!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I'm going to give them a very light, top down ivory highlight. I think this is the first time I've made 'zenithal' highlighting work. It's strange getting used to leaving aeas of your model the 'wrong' colour but they do look good once the layers are on. Obviously still a lot I can improve but I'm glad to finally have a basic grasp of it.<br />
<br />
I now think I need to re-paint the first squad AGAIN. This might mean they need stripping this time which is a pain in the arse but oh well - learning curves and all that.<br /><br />More painting to come over the next few weeks. I've got the first Ravenwing squad undercoated too. Soooo loving painting these after the tricky-ness of painting the Angels Sanguine 50/50 black and red - one colour marines are a joy!RebelGrothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15278367117453799381noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9080874443240934561.post-35017150411343335872013-04-02T00:34:00.001+01:002013-04-02T00:34:09.396+01:00From The Chopping Broard - Cataphractii Deathwing Knights Build Finished<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I'll keep this simple as it's past my bedtime. I'll just slap up a bunch of pictures with minimal writing...<br />
<br />I did little but work over Easter, apart from yesterday when I had time to finish off my Knights and start of Sammael's Jetbike. Everything is still WiP to different degrees. Knights are 90% finished apart from a little tidying up. Sammael (just Corvex at the moment) has a fairly long way to go yet...<br />

Hey folks.<br /><br />
I'm keeping this brief today as I really, really need to go eat, but I know I won't have chance to post after food tonight or over the Easter weekend.<br /><br />So, we went to Throne of Skulls. I got my arse kicked 4 out of 5 games. Kinda expected. Two losses were close (the kind I'd have won if the game hadn't ended on turn 5), two I got tabled. One I won. I had a good weekend but I'll leave it there before I start complaining to make myself feel better!<br />
<br />
While there I (of course) bought some stuff I really didn't need from Forgeworld - Cataphractii Terminators and a Scimitar Jetbike:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Images/Product/AlternativeFW/large/cata3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="272" src="http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Images/Product/AlternativeFW/large/cata3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Images/Product/AlternativeFW/large/jetpaint6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="272" src="http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Images/Product/AlternativeFW/large/jetpaint6.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The Scimitar is destined to become my own version of Samael, I have quite a bit of work planned for that model, though it'l be well after I start painting the Deathwing.<br />
<br />
As for the fancy Terminators they're in the process of becoming my Deathwing Knights. I've not done much in the way of WiP but will do a post on how I built them another time. For now, just a quick blu-tac mock up will have to do for you. I'm THAT hungry!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
Hope you like the look of them, more to come after the weekend hopefully. Happy Easter :)RebelGrothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15278367117453799381noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9080874443240934561.post-955827073683294512013-03-22T02:59:00.003+00:002013-03-22T02:59:55.575+00:00Throne of Skulls - Today!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

It's just gone 2:45am here in London. In 8.5 hours I'll be on the train to Warhammer World in Nottingham for March's Thrne of Skulls tournament.<br /><br />Of course, the fact I'm awake means my army is definitely not as painted as I'd like it to be, but I've reached a cut off point where 'they'll do'. Last time I pulled an all nighter and couldn't actually count out dice by the time I was part way through my first social game!<br />
<br />
So I probably shouldn't be updating the blog either oh well...<br /><br />The additions to the army were a Furioso Dread, a new 'naked' Sgt, an attack bike and another Stormraven. Here's my work tonight:<br />
<br />

I know, I know - not the promised painting progress. Instead of painting one thing a day I'm doing bits of everything all at once so there's not yet much to show.<br /><br />What I have done inbetween layers drying/whilst watching the first Grand Prix of the season is fit my Furioso with a Frag Cannon.<br />
<br />
His unipue pose required it to be on the wrong side though - here's how I made it work...<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />

I spent a long time re-posing the Dreadnought to be firing his heavy flamer 'right handed'. The standard Frag Cannon (FC) replaces the right arm though, which is a problem considering I wanted him armed with the flamer and FC.<br />
<br />
One solution was to use the old metal Dread already set up that way but, given the choice, no one in their right mind would use a metal Dread (IMHO), especially given a uniquely converted option. So therefore I needed to make it fit th left arm.<br />
<br />
All Blood Angel Dread kits come with the Libby parts, including a left arm for the force weapon:<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Librarian arm/Frag Cannon</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
First off, as you see above, I ripped off the fist part. Next up I carefully sawed out the ammo hopper (bottom box), ammo intake (rectangle above box) and the main muzzle assembly. Then I sawed out all the piston-y gubbins from the Librarian arm, leaving just the armoured 'shoulder'. I then carefully glued the pieces in place and left overnight to dry (it's very fragile at this point):<br />

Hey there.<br /><br />Been a couple of weeks since I posted so here's a quick refresh.<br />
<br />
Dark Angels are pretty much all built, just a couple of bike riders to finish off. The photo left and the ones further down this post show the (very simple) variety I've got from some of the DV miniatures.<br /><br />The impending task is not finishing the DA build though, it's a brief trip back to Angels Sanguine.On Fri 22nd four of us head to Warhamer World for Throne of Skulls. Thisis likely the last time I'll run Angels Sanguine/the BA codex at this tournament, it's their third trip there and it's time for something fresh (*cough* Eldar *cough*).<br />
<br />
I do need to get paint on them though. 6 Tac Marines, an Assault Sgt and finish off my second Raven and a Dread. I have one ay off before the 22nd - tomorrow - so I'll hopefuly be able to post this time tomorrow with some finished tabletop quality guys.<br />
<br />

Reclusiarch<br />
6 Death Company (power fist, maybe an axe)<br />
Death Company Dread (talons, hvy flamer)<br />
<br />
Priest (jump pack)<br />

Assault Squad x 10 (fist Sgt, melta, flamer)<br />
Assault Squad x 5 (naked)<br />
Tac Squad x 6 (combi-melta Sgt)<br />
<br />
Furioso Dread (fists, hvy flamer)<br />
<br />
Stormraven<br />
Stormraven<br />
<br />
In all the games I've played the troops all start on the table and pretty much get wiped out. Tournament scenery will see them die even quicker too.They o usually last long enough for the Ravens to come in though and, if they get into the enemy, they generally wipe out most things.<br />
<br />
It's aaimed at being a fluff list over everything being optimised, though I think I'm likely in for some flak for two Ravens, we'll have to see.<br />

Good morning (it's just after 1am in the UK). Just a very quick post tonight as I just finished gluing a whole bunch of Terminators including all three variants of Belial.<br />
<br />
While I don't dislike the original model of Belial (holding is sword up) I do think he's a little too static in the legs and face for that. He needs to be striding forward or shouting...anything better than silently waving his sword in the air.<br />
<br />
I gave the static body the Thunder Hammer and Storm shield combo. For the other two I used spare matching torso, head and legs from two of the Deathwing command sets. One got he resin arms, the sword now pointing down with him looking down the blade (at his defeated foe). The other is all plastic kitbash, he just look tear someone apart.<br />
<br />
With the rest I have 15 of 20 regular Terminators done and dusted. The Land Raider is also built. 5 more Termies, the 6 bikes and 2 attack bikes by Sunday I'm hoping...RebelGrothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15278367117453799381noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9080874443240934561.post-43264939800163366712013-02-21T12:25:00.000+00:002013-02-21T12:25:06.260+00:00Cork Basing - The Beginners Guide<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

With 'Project Dark Angels' commencing in earnest this week during a break from work I thought I'd pop up a post about how I'm doing the bases for these guys.<br />
<br />
All my previous (recent) models are based on gravel, sand, slate, or a combination. This works well and looks great - I just fancied a change for my next project.<br />
<br />
At first I was going to do snow, but considering half the force is already in pale armour (Deathwing) I decided against it. Cork has been increasingly visible across various forums etc over recent months, with some really great effects coming from it. I wanted to use it to create sort of dessert or dry river bed type terrain for my bases. Here's how I went about it...<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>So, first things first. Apart from cork, what will you need?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZuQuWKT7NAM3G-fbmbnLnjYZGLRe-PKXvNBjouOjja4q0v2TCse4T0BB88JM_Vw_mdGd2UMuqAj3boR-qzhqHMFjif-va_pMTHjNYnl7hhOqpVEI7RLpcdVu8qGaQmMjhTfJBMyl2IDI/s1600/2013-02-19+001+2013-02-19+006.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="209" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZuQuWKT7NAM3G-fbmbnLnjYZGLRe-PKXvNBjouOjja4q0v2TCse4T0BB88JM_Vw_mdGd2UMuqAj3boR-qzhqHMFjif-va_pMTHjNYnl7hhOqpVEI7RLpcdVu8qGaQmMjhTfJBMyl2IDI/s320/2013-02-19+001+2013-02-19+006.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Tools:<br />
Sharp knife/scalpel<br />
Pen<br />
Scissors<br />
Circle template/compass/base to draw round<br />
Super glue<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7LeVqnmM2UvDEsqed2rzHnzNzPmMdvhl4q5ivwFdgX-rUZwePv0vdmHpDoaJ0-rcLTPfrFbnK9ZiNi0lBkB3PDkHXUfO4VtYCxn04dGARIp2CHPaN2fllo84M0WblJzqTvNMwg2G2qHY/s1600/2013-02-19+001+2013-02-19+001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7LeVqnmM2UvDEsqed2rzHnzNzPmMdvhl4q5ivwFdgX-rUZwePv0vdmHpDoaJ0-rcLTPfrFbnK9ZiNi0lBkB3PDkHXUfO4VtYCxn04dGARIp2CHPaN2fllo84M0WblJzqTvNMwg2G2qHY/s320/2013-02-19+001+2013-02-19+001.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Enough bases for all the models you're working on - kind of obvious?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.mbmgulf.ae/images/amorim/expanded-cork.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="304" src="http://www.mbmgulf.ae/images/amorim/expanded-cork.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
With the cork you have a couple of options: thick or thin. Thicker cork is better off for bigger, chunkier 'rocks'. Bare in mind it does add height to your model, not always ideal when they start appearing over walls they used to be behind. An example of medium/thicker cork on a base can be found <a href="http://files.enjin.com/79100/MODLES/Tactdemo.png" target="_blank">here</a> courtesy of SirAstrates on B&C.<br />
<br />
I wanted something thinner though so headed down to an excellent <a href="http://www.modelshop.co.uk/cork-256-c.asp" target="_blank">local shop</a> where you can buy various thicknesses in large sheets. I ended up with 1.5mm thick, in a 60cm by 90cm sheet for just £2.50. I went with a thin cork so I can layer up in different ways as you'll soon see.<br />
<br />
Next up, draw a LOT of circles the size of your desired base. I had a circle template to hand, you can improvise as you see fit though. Exactly how many is up to you and the thickness of the cork. I wanted 3 layers per base, with 23 bases for the Terminators, meaning 69 circles of cork required.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjokzmUIXvinmgJ28M6ZeHnZYzUPnx2ZW_fLX2Et4ey9NfTrvndH454-GvInSCpsQgPsbnCrJVnQMKbInVjgcKUEMozKen2d9EeFJRi4gRWJSnmBCS6zmo2JsYcOluWTHjHxHyaWD-u7AI/s1600/2013-02-19+001+2013-02-19+005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjokzmUIXvinmgJ28M6ZeHnZYzUPnx2ZW_fLX2Et4ey9NfTrvndH454-GvInSCpsQgPsbnCrJVnQMKbInVjgcKUEMozKen2d9EeFJRi4gRWJSnmBCS6zmo2JsYcOluWTHjHxHyaWD-u7AI/s320/2013-02-19+001+2013-02-19+005.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Cut the circles out of the sheet then trim them down to the right shape and size<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYawVNS09qpzhr7T0AGM-9eHhKam_uBqQBYEc_niGeUnzLtfROlYYhC2kmlMfQE5Onp1-MeS69xFiwHHCSUT0pOcDfc_P-uTj3errGrs86NI7vyYTEHFb1qiMYXH56zuDfgX90KMEB2lA/s1600/2013-02-20+001+2013-02-20+001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYawVNS09qpzhr7T0AGM-9eHhKam_uBqQBYEc_niGeUnzLtfROlYYhC2kmlMfQE5Onp1-MeS69xFiwHHCSUT0pOcDfc_P-uTj3errGrs86NI7vyYTEHFb1qiMYXH56zuDfgX90KMEB2lA/s320/2013-02-20+001+2013-02-20+001.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The next step is quite flexible. You can glue three discs together and shape them together, glue them one at a time to the base and trim individually (this is what I did) or anything in between. Doing i individually let's you make each layer unique, exposing layers of the disc below.<br />
<br />
The main thing you do want to do as you go along with either method is trim the edges to rough them up, I literally picked off the smooth round edge with my finger nail to randomly add texture. If you bite your nails then a craft knife would do a similar job if you use it to pick rather than slice. You can also add tears to look like cracked, dry earth, add layers to represent exposed strata or make mini ravines between the two halves.<br />
<br />
With regards to glue I'm sure Uhu and similar works well but I didn't want any thickness added which you sometimes get with that. I used Zap-A-Gap thin CA. It soaked into the cork a little so you have to be careful not to get it stuck all over you!<br />
<br />
After gluing those layers together and trimming the edges roughly, plus adding in the occasional pattern you'll have something a little like this:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2tIr21THiP6FtqqJj0snybclyIAXHcBVvD42Q1bdxFQtaJy67T6j3OuBMGEMHDjM7PBB_FiG8UtTIM35CG7HrRWE7Yz6ai_6TFCUzXpoh3JoG1UR4OsuDcjfcWFUiZPrpXzxPRGwEouY/s1600/2013-02-21+001+2013-02-21+001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2tIr21THiP6FtqqJj0snybclyIAXHcBVvD42Q1bdxFQtaJy67T6j3OuBMGEMHDjM7PBB_FiG8UtTIM35CG7HrRWE7Yz6ai_6TFCUzXpoh3JoG1UR4OsuDcjfcWFUiZPrpXzxPRGwEouY/s320/2013-02-21+001+2013-02-21+001.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Enlarge for a better look</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Now, you'll see there's some big blank patches on those bases. I wasn't too keen on these. Luckily I picked up a bag of cork granules at the same shop as the cork sheet - super cheap at £1.30. I used PVA glue in some of the nooks and crannies to add 'crumbling rock' at the edges of the solid sections. I also added 6 small resin skulls - not too many though, just enough to add detail.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
When the PVA started to dry I added a drop of the thin super glue here and there on the granules to help fix them in place - it wick well between the pieces. The skulls were secured with Uhu glue.<br />
<br />
Here's a test shot with the Belial model on one of the finished bases<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDFnzZFgVR8RlZpczRdgrqlBUgrQ6TSRucwEv79EJlfC04DvdelQT-KOGvM75mqvuQ2rP4HQq3LM4T4MV5XeHqOJByo9VA58mwDgTFLzznF8oLIvTzieLCTX5IDZwQLBnZ1FYuFVVGfDA/s1600/2013-02-21+001+2013-02-21+005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDFnzZFgVR8RlZpczRdgrqlBUgrQ6TSRucwEv79EJlfC04DvdelQT-KOGvM75mqvuQ2rP4HQq3LM4T4MV5XeHqOJByo9VA58mwDgTFLzznF8oLIvTzieLCTX5IDZwQLBnZ1FYuFVVGfDA/s320/2013-02-21+001+2013-02-21+005.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
A really simple, if slightly fiddly, basing method. The results look cool already and should hopefully improve with paint; I'm thinking a reddish-brown earth colour with a lighter brown drybrush to pick out the texture of the cork and the granules.<br />
<br />
The next job is repeating this for the bike bases and the other two Belials (one of each weapon choice), then finally gluing together the guys to go on them. I'm really looking forward to this army looking great (I hope), and I'm very pleased how his first batch of these bases has come out.<br />
<br />
Give it a go, i's cheap, very easy to use - the bases retain a good flat surface to mount models on and is much more user friendly than drilling and gluing slate.<br />
<br />
I hope you agree!RebelGrothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15278367117453799381noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9080874443240934561.post-54964420916578294132013-02-03T02:02:00.001+00:002013-02-03T02:03:33.976+00:00Incoming: Dark Angels<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Hey all, just a quickie.<br />
<br />
Picked up my order from the excellent <a href="http://www.darksphere.co.uk/index.php" target="_blank">Dark Sphere</a> here in London today, saving myself a tidy £35 thanks to their webstore discount.<br />
<br />
I got two Deathwing boxes, one Ravenwing box and my <i>first ever</i> Land Raider - not bad considering I've had a marine army since early third edition.<br />
<br />
From the bits box I have ten DV Terminators, five standard assault Termies (now with their arms pulled off) and twelve bikes (six DV) and an old attack bike. All this will give me a force, if I've planned right, which will scale from 1,500 points, through 1,750 and up to 2,000<br />
<br />
Preliminary list is:<br />
<br />
Belial<br />
10 Deathwing; assault cannon, cyclone, 2 x chainfist<br />
5 Deathwing; Sgt 2 x lightning claw, 4 thunder hammer and shield, cyclone<br />
Land Raider (standard or crusader - magnetised)<br />
Ravenwing Squadron; 6 bikes, melta attack bike<br />
<br />
No idea if it's any good. I'm avoiding net lists and the like as much as possible - want to try and form my own opinions about this one - at least at first.<br />
<br />
The two new kits look super versatile and have a good share of spare bits. There'll be a few kit bashes to make those standard termies a bit more 'DA', and also to add some variety within the duplicated DV ones.<br />

I'm surprised the net hasn't collapsed under the weight of Terminator armour this last week or two. Everyone and his mother has finally started work on the Dark Vengeance models and adding a smattering of the new Dark Angel releases.<br />
<br />
The Grotto is no exception to this I'm afraid!<br />
<br />
In the most traditional sense of bandwagon jumping, and having <i>almost</i> started this force at some point during each of the four codexes, I finally put (air)brush to paint last weekend.<br />
<br />
I don't really want a new Marine army, if 'm honest, but that fact it's models/units I never currently use, an entirely different paint scheme and I have 10 DV Termies already, along with a bunch of old bikes, is about as much justification as I need.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTdUo7TBykimu2iBBJQz-TPaGMh7ZaSa_3lGUiuUXgGIx2Kyn5o05MUm9m_NolYY_fc4wUEn72jbvvoS92qng8_Pij0VmBIlYytf4CUEG_LyZnhSIStGmVeG52PviuvCyulnF1vy7pwpc/s1600/2013-01-29+001+2013-01-29+002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="229" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTdUo7TBykimu2iBBJQz-TPaGMh7ZaSa_3lGUiuUXgGIx2Kyn5o05MUm9m_NolYY_fc4wUEn72jbvvoS92qng8_Pij0VmBIlYytf4CUEG_LyZnhSIStGmVeG52PviuvCyulnF1vy7pwpc/s320/2013-01-29+001+2013-01-29+002.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I gave these guys a quick blast with Vallejo Radome Tan, then just quickly airbrushed a wash of brown over them. This is also a good project for me learning more techniques with this tool.<br />
<br />
Next up is purchases. I want to run a 10 man squad of shooty, a 5 man of hitty blokes, 5 Knights and a mixed Command Squad. I though three boxes would cover this, added to the 10 DV models I will already have.<br />
<br />
I then started thinking about all the bits in those kits, the duplicates of the standard Termie in the DV models and a couple of other things. In the end I planned it out in what can only really be described as a complicated mess:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">You win 1,000 points if it is understandable to you...</td></tr>

<br />
Anyway, he good thing from that is that I actually only need two boxes of Deathwing. I'll probably go for a single box of the new Ravenwing in that case - I have about 6 bikes between my bit boxes so already have enough for a detachment.<br />
<br />
Add to this order a good ol' Land Raider (will be my first EVER one) and, of course, Belial and I'll be good to go. Turn around on these needs to be pretty speedy. In future they'll mainly be used for ally detachments and Apoc Angels of Death lists.<br />
<br />
Beyond that it's almost time for the Eldar to take centre stage in my world!RebelGrothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15278367117453799381noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9080874443240934561.post-47359083298176278502013-01-18T20:34:00.000+00:002013-01-18T20:34:00.449+00:00From The Chopping Board - Articulating a Dreadnought: Build Finished<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Two posts below this, there's the first half of this article, so go read that first if you like (and haven't already).<br />
<br />
Done that? Right, let's crack on...<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>As mentioned in my previous post, I lost my phone which included all the work in progress shots for this project. As you can see in the first picture, he's now covered in a couple of layers of paint.I'm going to do my best to show what work was done between part one and now.<br />
<br />
Previously I'd cut the arms out of the shoulder mounts and we were at this stage:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiinU9LzYXjeoLpDe5kWYRXxHCPxQvN-8uZfdIlG1BsLRBC_5uM27EUit7j7Ft7ojfr5_JJxOPZUtI8pMuMEZe4KLF0HcqhmtZlimofCrJyh5E_7B6c7X0fDzwdlI2FViimrFVh52L_oZk/s1600/2012-12-02+003+2012-12-02+002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="241" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiinU9LzYXjeoLpDe5kWYRXxHCPxQvN-8uZfdIlG1BsLRBC_5uM27EUit7j7Ft7ojfr5_JJxOPZUtI8pMuMEZe4KLF0HcqhmtZlimofCrJyh5E_7B6c7X0fDzwdlI2FViimrFVh52L_oZk/s320/2012-12-02+003+2012-12-02+002.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
To rebuild the arm at the desired angle I filled the shoulder joint with Milliput then pushed the shoulder joint onto the body while it was soft - in order to maintain the plug hole for the body/arm connection. It's good to add a little water/saliva to stop it sticking, works wonders.<br /><br />I then worked the arm onto the lump of putty sticking out of the shoulder piece and got it to the desired angle. Again, a little saliva stopped the arm sticking. I then left it to cure for about an hour, maybe two, then replaced the arm on the now much more firm putty, and roughly trimmed down all the excess. I tidied it up properly once it was much more properly cured.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7vk1aZ9qE4kZoDHNjj8vx6IFkYxWgOwEmMHycF7ioyZan8CUhBHl1q2lvOhc5ai32lqH4wGLkOnsylle_68-lcXBB7gBJADH50KHU-6gUnR8wcIxmiLhyzLF9VK33dcH3QPTLZt2LRsc/s1600/2013-01-17+001+2013-01-17+008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7vk1aZ9qE4kZoDHNjj8vx6IFkYxWgOwEmMHycF7ioyZan8CUhBHl1q2lvOhc5ai32lqH4wGLkOnsylle_68-lcXBB7gBJADH50KHU-6gUnR8wcIxmiLhyzLF9VK33dcH3QPTLZt2LRsc/s320/2013-01-17+001+2013-01-17+008.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This gave me the arm angled out in a pointing/firing direction shown above and in the first picture of this post. I repeated this with the left arm which was a little more simple as I wanted it hanging straight at his side:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoatCv0Kwa4MzuvADesb9UjUQotg8gvhB8_n1dCaUrv63DySEZVXxk5UDmTvmZo84ElLwmIG1DSokBCizpMvYUrhZqzttsT5qte1ozJbT7DJU35f-5sN1EnFXVbDyOT2c3ynN0cmwc8f0/s1600/2013-01-17+001+2013-01-17+005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoatCv0Kwa4MzuvADesb9UjUQotg8gvhB8_n1dCaUrv63DySEZVXxk5UDmTvmZo84ElLwmIG1DSokBCizpMvYUrhZqzttsT5qte1ozJbT7DJU35f-5sN1EnFXVbDyOT2c3ynN0cmwc8f0/s320/2013-01-17+001+2013-01-17+005.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Next up for these arms was fitting their weapons. With a little trimming the pointing arm's flamer went on fine. The melta on the black arm needed it's hose removing to fit. The melta's hose was trimmed down and replaced quite simply (see above). The flamer's needed twisting (gently or you'll snap it) into place:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfKruNYqgOmHrpXPYE1I7vBndZHHuv11-NI1ocm_JYKYmgFGHLeHYLTelr7_FB-Sc_8NXuAvydmuBgq7flrz7qJmjNtMGXgyPccXbLLz5Jr4YBk5S3y4QIY4dTVFJUvBxOBlaEeMUyKzw/s1600/2013-01-17+001+2013-01-17+007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfKruNYqgOmHrpXPYE1I7vBndZHHuv11-NI1ocm_JYKYmgFGHLeHYLTelr7_FB-Sc_8NXuAvydmuBgq7flrz7qJmjNtMGXgyPccXbLLz5Jr4YBk5S3y4QIY4dTVFJUvBxOBlaEeMUyKzw/s320/2013-01-17+001+2013-01-17+007.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Next up was to replace the cables I'd trimmed from both arms. I have a set of <a href="http://www.masq-mini.com/index.php?sprache=2" target="_blank">these</a>:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="320" src="http://www.masq-mini.com/abbildungen/0420_Schlauchtoolset_3.jpg" width="224" /></div>
<br />
Once you've had a little practice they work a treat. I added three or four to each arm:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

Sorry, they're about the best pictures I could manage. They looked a bit like this before:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEQ-FcSfowUK3KN7qwQH_9Ug6B7jDU59jASU9mFxmZ69grI_1gXonYOczPt69sGDxEDfwIjHhFqB5E1kNLwHfFRWw6e_tOYUIv1VZHgO_zMjJC6-h4cssKVNIrv5dtYjw-zpL-7Mg8XZ4/s1600/2012-12-02+001+2012-12-02+004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="246" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEQ-FcSfowUK3KN7qwQH_9Ug6B7jDU59jASU9mFxmZ69grI_1gXonYOczPt69sGDxEDfwIjHhFqB5E1kNLwHfFRWw6e_tOYUIv1VZHgO_zMjJC6-h4cssKVNIrv5dtYjw-zpL-7Mg8XZ4/s320/2012-12-02+001+2012-12-02+004.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The only other thing I did with the arms was drill a hole inside the shoulder and body joint and add a pin so they'll stay at the right angles. I've not used anything else to hold them to the body; it's a petty snug fit without needing magnets etc.<br />
<br />
For transport I like to be able to split my Dreads into legs body and arms. The easiest way to fix the body is using magnets. For this drill a pilot hole in the leg and body sections of the waist joint. Then drill the correct size hole for the magnet and pop them in place:<br />

Note the additional pin and hole, again to keep him pointing the correct way. This guy has a lump of slate on his base, I might have to add another magnet for a little security, I'll wait and see.<br />
